About SEED Sierra Leone

Supporting Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (SEED) is a nationally recognized development organization committed to improving the socio-economic wellbeing of marginalized and underserved communities across Sierra Leone. Founded in 2009 by a former Sierra Leonean war child, SEED was born out of lived experience and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. Today, we work to empower individuals and communities to build resilient livelihoods, claim their social rights, and create sustainable pathways out of poverty.

Our mission is rooted in grassroots action. We believe that lasting development happens when people are equipped with the skills, resources, and opportunities to drive change for themselves. Through income-generating initiatives, sustainable Agriculture entrepreneurship development, education, and community engagement, SEED supports individuals particularly women and young people to become active agents of economic and social transformation.

Based in Sierra Leone, a country rich in natural and mineral resources, we recognize that environmental sustainability is inseparable from human development. Poor and marginalized communities are often the most dependent on natural resources for survival and, at the same time, the most affected by environmental degradation. This creates a cycle of vulnerability that undermines livelihoods and wellbeing. SEED therefore integrates environmental protection into all aspects of our work, with a strong focus on climate-smart agriculture, sustainable land use, and gender-responsive approaches that acknowledge the disproportionate impact of environmental challenges on women.

Our core thematic areas of work include:

·       Climate Smart Agriculture

·       Livelihoods and Governance

·       Conflict Prevention and Peace Preservation

·       Youth and Women’s Economic Empowerment

·       Environment and Gender (cross-cutting)

All our programmes are guided by a set of core principles. We prioritize local ownership, using participatory approaches that ensure communities define their own challenges and solutions. Empowerment is central to our work we support individuals to make informed decisions and take control of their futures. Sustainability underpins every project, with careful consideration of long-term social, economic, and environmental impact. We focus on strengthening existing structures, working collaboratively with government institutions and civil society rather than creating parallel systems. Finally, we value innovation and learning, continuously adapting to improve our impact.
